CJ and I were talking about death last night. Not in a sad depressing way, but just a matter of fact way. Since his mom recently passed away we've both been thinking about it a lot lately.
Once we started talking about his mom I started crying a little bit. I apologized to him for always crying and having a challenging time with her passing because I miss her. I mentioned to CJ that I don't handle death too easily because I have been fortunate enough to not have much death in my life. Unlike me, he has had quite a bit of death in his life. Well he continued to say that he thinks IM the unfortunate person because I haven't had much death in my life and that he is more fortunate because he's been able to experience it and learn from it.
What do you think? Is it a good thing or bad thing for a person to experience lots of death? I think Cj is a little jaded while I may be a little naïve to death. What's your opinion?
P.S. this post isn't a depressing one but I had to add "death's" picture on there for the sake of humor. Ha. Ha.

Well... I don't know that you can say death in high numbers is good to experience, nor can you say its good to be completely sheltered from death. I also have to say that its not quantity per se, but rather quality. I'll explain... if I had an acquaintance (someone at school for instance, if we weren't close the quality of that relationship is lower being that they are *just* an acquaintance) that died, it affects me differently than it would if it were a BFF of some sort. Once I got to high school, there was always at least one person that I knew that died. The same continued on in college, but death never affected me the way it did until my mom died in '05. It is *different* to lose your mother, or a sibling or someone close to you than it is to lose a casual friend. Losing a lot of loved ones can be taxing on some people, and some people are good at shaking it off. Take my brother for example. Obviously, he lost his mom when he was 13 (barely), and then his best friend (also an ex-girlfriend) committed suicide 5-ish years later. I would say he is not as high functioning as your husband might be. Death is not as simple as some people make it out to be. You have to consider how close you were to them, the way they died, your connection to them *after* they die. All those things can make it hard on a person, it really just depends.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, we're all going to die. And I have a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that I will some day be buried in the ground and the next time I'll physically be with family is during the Resurrection. Its weird. And I hope death is just like birth to this earth (in my mind, I think we were probably terrified to become mortal human beings before we came here, but now that we're here, we love it!... I hope the same is true for the Spirit World/after life).
Sorry for the novel, if what I said makes no sense, just message me on fbook. :)
Thanks for your reply makamae! I was wondering if the topic was too sensitive since I didn't get many replies. I really appreciate your opinion because I also think you're right. All death is not the same and affects everybody differently!
